What is the PTE exam?
PTE Academic is a computer-based English-language test from Pearson. It assesses speaking, writing, reading and listening at a test centre. The test reports an overall score and individual skill scores on a 10–90 scale. The receiving institution or authority determines the scores it requires; there is no single target that suits every application.

Your first task is to identify the exact requirement for your course, professional registration or other application. Write down the test name, minimum overall score, any minimum skill scores and the last acceptable submission date. That short list is more useful than choosing a test because someone else found it easier.
PTE Academic, Core or UKVI?
| Test | What to investigate | Before buying |
|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | Academic English requirements for study and other accepted uses. | Check your programme’s accepted test and score requirements. |
| PTE Core | Everyday English; Pearson positions it for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship applications. | Confirm the exact requirement with the receiving authority. |
| PTE Academic UKVI | The UKVI version for applications that specifically require it. | Check the test named in your application requirements. |

These names are not interchangeable at checkout. A voucher description should explicitly identify the supported test. Read our PTE Academic vs Core comparison if you are unsure which product you are looking at.
PTE Academic test format
The test is organised into Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. Use current practice material: Pearson’s updated Speaking & Writing section includes Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Old preparation checklists may omit these tasks.
| Section | What to practise | Useful preparation habit |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking & Writing | Responding aloud, summarising information and writing clearly. | Record responses and review whether you addressed the prompt. |
| Reading | Understanding passages, relationships between ideas and context. | Explain why an answer fits, rather than memorising it. |
| Listening | Following recorded information and producing accurate responses. | Practise focused listening and concise note-taking. |

What does the PTE exam cost in India?
The official fee and our voucher selling price are different figures. Check the current provider fee for the exact test and country, then compare the complete amount payable under any offer. Our price guide lists ₹18,900 as a reference exam price and ₹18,000 as a voucher price. The difference is ₹900. Ask for your final payable total before deciding. See the current offer details.
Use the PTE fee and savings calculator to compare amounts you have verified. Include booking-assistance charges and any remaining exam payment. Check prices again before paying; an old screenshot is not evidence of the current fee.

Identification and eligibility before booking
Pearson’s identification policy calls for a valid passport, with country-specific exceptions explained in that policy. Check the rules for your citizenship and testing location rather than assuming another document is accepted. Your booking details must match the required ID; an expired or unavailable passport can disrupt your plans.

If you are under 18, review the consent process. If you need an accommodation, use Pearson’s official request route before choosing an appointment. Resolve unusual name or account issues before paying instead of creating another account to get around them.
Build a realistic preparation and booking plan
Start with your deadline
Record when the receiving organisation needs your score, not just when you hope to sit the test. Leave room for processing, preparation and a possible further attempt.
Identify the gaps
Use official sample tasks to see which skills need attention. Set practice sessions around the tasks and skills that are difficult for you.
Check the practical details
Confirm your identification, travel arrangements and available dates. Pick a test centre you can reach reliably.
Review the offer, then book
Compare the final cost and terms, buy only an eligible voucher if appropriate, and save the provider-issued appointment confirmation.
Our interactive booking checklist helps you review these steps without entering personal data. For the full appointment process, use the PTE exam booking guide.
